Why Does Work Feel Like Work?
The Art of Feel-Good Productivity
Have you ever asked somebody how their work day was and their response was, “work is work.”
How can we has a capitalist society start thinking of work as something fun instead of an annoying responsibility?
I just finished reading the book “Feel-Good Productivity” by Ali Abdaal (link to the book will be at the bottom) and in this weeks newsletter I’m going to give you a new perspective on work and how to ACTUALLY enjoy it.
Let’s dive in 🤿
Read time: 2 minutes, 44 seconds
Step 1: Play
The child like wonder tends to fade away the older we get and the more responsibilities we have. How can an adult with a full time job play? Especially during working hours?
The question to ask yourself when you are dreading the work ahead is, “What would make this fun or more enjoyable?” An easy go to for me is throwing in a pair of ear buds and listening to some music or a podcast. It’s an easy get away from the over bearing thought of what is ahead.
The best way to enjoy more of what you do is add something you enjoy outside of work into your daily habit during work.
Step 2: Get Started
Remember a few newsletters ago when I talked about “Eating the frog”
If not let me explain…
Mark Twain once said, “If it is your job to eat the frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning.”
In other words, The worst possible part of the job should always come first because at that point everything from there is down hill. Your day will become easier and easier.
So instead of worrying about the grueling project that seems so large that you may never finish it, just start! The first 10 minutes of it will be the worst, once you are in the zone, it’ll be harder to stop than it was to start. Trust me.
Step 3: Organize
Sometimes you need to organize your projects and the massive amount of things that need to be done. It’s not the actual amount of stuff needing to be done, it’s the thought of the “massive” amounts of things that need to be done that can overwhelm and often paralyze you into procrastination.
So my advice is step back. Take a second look and find the frog. What’s the biggest thing on this list? Do it first. Allocate your time to the more important things and schedule in breaks. Don’t burn yourself out. Make time for the big things first and most importantly what is sustainable for you!
This newsletter wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for Ali’s book. It has been such a helpful insight to how I work and most importantly how I can be better.
I couldn’t recommend this book enough!
