Which Is The Best Siding?

Vinyl vs LP SmartSide

Today, we're taking a closer look at siding.

While many of us have opted for the convenience of vinyl siding without much consideration for alternatives, there's a contender on the horizon that might just outshine the worn-out plastic.

We’re putting it to the test…

Let’s dive in 🤿

Design

So what’s this new siding I talk about?

LP SmartSide!

While it isn’t 100% renewable, LP harvests their lumber sustainably under Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) standards.

LP uses a combination of engineered lumber and natural lumber. It’s overlapped and all treated with Zinc borate, resins, and waxes to create a strong board.

Vinyl’s technical term is polyvinyl chloride (aka PVC). The biggest problem with Vinyl is that the components of which it is made don’t recycle very well, and if it gets thrown into a landfill, it becomes toxic.

Now with that in mind, vinyl tends to last about 10 years longer than LP has shown to (Vinyl does start to wear pretty badly after a bit though). While LP is easier to install, it takes a lot more upkeep than vinyl will, but your house won’t be covered in plastic…

Cost

Vinyl’s full installation cost varies, but on average, you are looking at $6-$10 per sqft. This cost all depends on the size of the house it’s being installed on and what design of vinyl you choose. Prices will be different in your region than in mine.

LP SmartSide’s cost per sqft will also vary depending on your region and how much house you’ve got, but somewhere between $9-$15 will fully install the LP product.

So, Which Is Better?

If you are on a tight budget, you might want to stick with our good old vinyl siding. You could also get fancy with it and do board and batten (my favorite-looking vinyl). This is a great option if you want to change it up a bit!

LP SmartSide gives you the look of nice wooden siding that many of us love so much. If you want to get custom and are looking for a more sustainable product, LP might be the choice for you!

Overall, it comes down to taste. If you like the look of nice vinyl, then go for it, but if it’s not your thing and you are tired of the same old, same old, maybe give LP SmartSide a try!
